“The difference you are making is clearly palpable and extremely encouraging. I continue to have a profound interest in what is happening in the area and the ambition that you all share for the young people who deserve the best. Thank you again for all you are doing.”

The need for our work.

Watch Alex, our CEO and Co-Founder, discussing the need for our work in today’s society.

In particular, Alex is highlighting the estimated cost of exclusion being £370,000 per young person to society, vs ReconnectEd's cost per child of £2,826.

Key findings from Year 1

September 2023 – August 2024

94% RETENTION OF RECONNECTED PUPILS

95% OF SECONDARY PUPILS TRANSITIONED SUCCESSFULLY BACK INTO MAINSTREAM CLASSES

100% OF PUPILS WOULD RECOMMEND HAVING A COACH TO THEIR FRIENDS

74% DECREASE IN INTERNAL EXCLUSIONS PER PUPIL SINCE LAST ACADEMIC YEAR

36% DECREASE IN SUSPENSIONS PER PUPIL SINCE LAST ACADEMIC YEAR

We are really proud of the findings evidenced in our 2024 Impact Report, particularly as we are working with the most vulnerable of pupil cohorts: each of the 33 ReconnectEd pupils supported last year suffered from childhood trauma and have an average of 3 Adverse Childhood Experiences. 64% of our pupils are living in extreme deprivation and are eligible for Pupil Premium. Therefore, it is immensely uplifting to see that we achieved:

  • 94% Pupil Retention

  • 95% of secondary pupils transitioned successfully back into mainstream classes

  • There was a 74% reduction in internal exclusions per pupil and a 36% reduction in suspensions per pupil in comparison to last year. This is particularly significant in light of recent research which identifies young people suspended during secondary school as being twice as likely to be out of education, employment or training by age 24

  • Mansel Primary School had a 100% decrease in whole school permanent exclusions and Yewlands

Academy had a 20% decrease in whole school permanent exclusions in comparison to the year before

For the first time this year we ran a survey to collect the anonymised feedback from our pupils, their parents and teachers.

This is what they had to say about the ReconnectEd Coaching programme:

“I feel like my Coach is someone I can trust because he helps me and listens to me when I need him”

Case Study

'Luke' is 10 years old and lives with his mother, two sisters and mum's new partner. Luke experienced a seriously traumatic event at the age of 8 and presented at school as angry and uninterested. Luke found it difficult to concentrate in class and his school became increasingly concerned for his future. As part of Luke’s plan the school referred him to the ReconnectEd Coaching Programme.

The ReconnectEd Coach, Ryan, identified that Luke loved to sing so together they would learn and write songs together with the guitar. Ryan used music as a self-soothing method for Luke and to build his confidence.

Luke's school was worried that without additional support Luke would find it difficult to settle in class and engage in learning. So Ryan worked in partnership with Luke’s teacher to help Luke to settle in class and be better able to talk about his feelings.

Luke's teacher noted how Luke's confidence was building and he was able to self-express in healthier ways, over time. Ryan helped Luke to address his destructive beliefs by helping him to see that he has a compelling future. Ryan instilled hope in Luke so that he started to try for himself.

Ryan has also worked with Luke's teacher for the new academic year to provide the full context of Luke's development and to build on this year's success. Luke is ready to enjoy summer and to continue his ReconnectEd journey in Y6.

We continue working with STEER to measure our impact. STEER is an award-winning organisation, and we are using their pioneering platform to assess each young person’s self-regulation and mental wellbeing, and look at trends which we can compare against national datasets.

Our STEER data shows that in November 2023 39% of our pupil cohort had poor emotional wellbeing.

In May 2024, this decreased to 22% due to the impact of the coaching programme

"My child's Coach has made a big difference in my child's attendance with school and put less pressure on me as a parent with his support which I've needed for many years. I've seen a bigger attendance improvement and been very well supported as a parent with my son's needs in dealing with school on a daily basis to improve his attendance and be at targets. He has achieved so much in his year 5 class. I am one proud parent this term with my son with the thanks to his Coach."

Our aims

Social mobility

Young people facing adversity flourish in mainstream school leading to re-engagement with learning so that there is improved attendance and punctuality, and fewer suspensions and permanent exclusions, leading to better attainment and life chances.

Sustainability

Cost savings to society because more young people facing adversity stay in mainstream school, attain qualifications and find employment.  Our longer-term goal is to influence government policy so that funding can be provided at an earlier stage – leading to safer and more prosperous communities, and a greater understanding and recognition that schools have the expertise but need more resources.

Positive ripple effect

Teachers are better able to help all young people learn and thrive. By addressing the root causes of the young people’s behaviour, we expect their relationships to improve with their peers, teachers, families and communities.
